From Challenge to Change

Everyone faces challenges. For years, I watched students and young people struggle to overcome obstacles—even when resources were available. Many felt overwhelmed, unsure where to turn for help, or how to apply advice in their own lives. The decline in reading and the rise of digital distractions made it even harder for young people to absorb helpful information. The result? A growing mental health crisis, with many students feeling persistently sad, hopeless, or alone.

My Turning Point

As an educator for over 30 years, I saw firsthand how difficult it was for students to find the right support. I realized that overcoming challenges requires more than just access to information—it demands a systematic approach, encouragement, and tailored tools. Inspired by research on reflective writing, growth mindset, and the power of social support, I set out to create something new.

The Birth of VAST Journey

VAST Journey began as a serious play protocol to help people overcome some of the challenges they faced during the COVID-19 pandemic. My team found volunteers who play tested the initial system. After successful playtesting feedback we dreamed of making it accessible to everyone. Our first MVP launched in 2023 and today, it’s a fully functional smartphone app, available on major app stores. The app helps users break down challenges, set achievable goals, and connect with supportive allies. Whether you’re a student, teacher, parent, or mentor, VAST Journey offers curated quests, media recommendations, and daily prompts to keep you motivated and growing.

Transformational Impact

Since launch, VAST Journey has helped users achieve real change—both inside and outside the app. In 2023, our work was recognized with an International Award at the Serious Play Conference for creating transformational change in users’ lives. This honor reflects the dedication of our team and the power of combining research-based strategies with innovative technology.
