Celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week

Right now, Teacher Appreciation Week is being celebrated throughout the U.S. Many people think highly of their teachers, especially those who guided them toward new opportunities and experiences. Whether you are a current student or graduated many years ago, you can probably think of at least one teacher who has had a significant impact on you.

Good teachers don’t simply impart knowledge about the subject they are hired to teach. They care about the overall well-being of their students and often offer personal support in addition to academic guidance. When students are dealing with difficult challenges, their teachers notice, and may step in to offer advice or simply provide a positive, supportive environment.

Teachers spend most of their time with their students each day. This interaction often helps shape the students in ways that persist long after they leave the classroom. Teachers may help students develop many of the opinions, interests, and character traits they take with them throughout their lives. For example, you may have had a science teacher who inspired you to pursue a career in engineering. Or you may have had a teacher in elementary school who recommended a certain book to you that inspired your lifelong love of reading. The possibilities are endless.

For many people, teachers are not only educators but also mentors. When students make mistakes, their teachers provide personalized feedback to help them become more successful next time. Teachers sympathize with their students’ struggles and celebrate their successes. They are often some of their students’ biggest supporters.

The In-Formation team understands that support from others, especially teachers, often facilitates students’ personal growth. For that reason, the VAST Journey app includes features to help users get the kind of support, encouragement, and guidance that teachers often provide for their students. For example, you can invite someone else to join you within the app as an Ally and help you tackle a challenge you are trying to overcome. Your Allies can check in on your progress and offer advice and encouragement as needed.

If you are thinking fondly of a current or former teacher this week, I encourage you to reach out to them and let them know how thankful you are for their guidance.
